Lucky Loonie 2006
The Royal Canadian Mint created this Lucky Loonie to celebrate a Canadian Olympic story and to wish all the Canadian athletes the very best of luck for the 2006 Olympics in Torino.
Reverse: At the top, the official emblem of the Canadian Olympic Team. In the center, the familiar loon in flight. Along the rim, “Canada”, the year of issue, and “Dollar”.
Obverse: The portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Along the ring, the inscriptions "Elizabeth II" on the left, and "D•G•Regina" on the right.
The Royal Canadian Mint has provided each member of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic teams with a Lucky Loonie as their own personal good luck charm. At the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002, a loonie brought a stroke of good fortune to Canada when our men's and women's hockey teams skated to victory over a Lucky Loonie buried secretly beneath centre ice.
