Franco-Japanese Treaty – The Ichikawa Ebizo IV Silver Proof Coin


The French Mint celebrates the 150th Anniversary of the Franco-Japanese Treaty with this 2008 1.5 euro silver proof coin featuring a portrait of Ichikawa Ebizo IV.

Reverse: In the center, a Japanese portrait of Ichikawa Ebizo IV.


Obverse: On top, "France-Japon" (France-Japan) and "150e Anniversaire" (150th Anniversary). On the left, the year of issue. In the center, the official logo of the 150th Anniversary of this treaty showing the Eiffel Tower and a kimono. On the right, “RF” for “French Republic”. At the bottom, the face value.


Ichikawa Ebizo IV is a stage name taken on by a series of Kabuki actors of the Ichikawa family. The Franco-Japanese "Treaty of peace, friendship and commerce" was signed in October 1858. It constitutes the first step in Franco-Japanese relations, which are today both rich and warm.
