The history of the National Theater of Bulgaria goes back to 1904 when the “Sulza i Smyah” (”Tears and Laughter”) theatrical troupe changed its name to the “Bulgarian National Theater”. The theater officially opened in January 1907. Located in the capital city of Sofia, it is the oldest theater in Bulgaria and one of the most important landmarks. The theater was later renamed in honor of the distinguished Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov.
