Issued by the Perth Mint as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu, this 2010 silver proof coin celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Robert Schumann. Born in Saxony, Schumann (1810-1856) is one of the most famous and important Romantic composers of the 19th century. As a young man he studied the piano, but a hand injury ended his hopes of becoming a virtuoso. Instead, Schumann dedicated himself to composition. During different phases of his career, he focused on keyboard music, song, chamber music, choral music, opera and symphony. Schumann’s genius, however, was cut short by his death in an asylum in 1856.

The coin’s reverse shows a representation of Robert Schumann, a large treble clef, music notes, and the inscription ‘Robert Schumann 1810 – 1856’. The coin’s obverse depicts Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Perth Mint’s distinctive ‘P’ mintmark, the face value, and the year of issue.
