Description Technical Information

The Centenary of Powered Flight, a 2010 Postal Numismatic Cover from Australia containing one commemorative $2.10 Australia Post stamp and one exclusive Perth Mint commemorative dollar coin.

We're currently out of stock.

This very special Australia Post stamp and coin cover commemorates the 100-years anniversary of powered flight in Australia and features a representation of famous escapologist Harry Houdini’s Voisin bi-plane, which he flew successfully at Diggers Rest, near Melbourne, 100 years ago in March. The coin's reverse shows Houdini’s bi-plane, the Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, and the inscription 'AUSTRALIAN CENTENARY OF FLIGHT DIGGERS REST MARCH 18th 1910'. The obverse shows an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the face value, and the year of issue.

The coin is housed in an illustrated envelope bearing a commemorative $2.10 Australia Post stamp depicting Houdini’s aircraft. The stamp is canceled with a special postmark containing the words FIRST DAY OF ISSUE 9 MARCH 2010 DIGGERS REST VICTORIA 3427. Each Stamp and Coin Cover features Australia Post’s numbered seal of authenticity.

On March 18 1910 at Digger's Rest, Victoria, renowned American "Escapologist" Harry Houdini made the first of several well-publicised flights in this country. His aircraft was an imported Voisin with his name emblazoned on the tail. Houdini's longest flight that day, over a distance of about three kilometers, earned him a trophy from the Aerial League of Australia.
