The 50th Anniversary of the Mini, a 2009 silver proof £5 coin from the United Kingdom.

Issued by the Royal Mint for the Channel Island of Alderney, this 2009 silver proof coin celebrates the 50th anniversary of the most iconic of British cars: the Mini. The Mini was officially launched on August 26, 1959. Its unique and revolutionary design by Alec Issigonis influenced a generation of car-makers.

The Swinging Sixties was the Mini’s heyday and the Mini soon became the country’s most popular car. Over 50 million Minis have been sold worldwide and many ‘classic’ versions are still on the road and loved by their owners. The Mini has won many awards over the years, including ‘Car of the Century’, ‘Number One Classic Car of All Time’, and ‘European Car of the Century’ in a worldwide Internet poll in 1999.

The reverse features a design specially created for this anniversary with the inscription: "50th Anniversary of the first Mini".
