Description Technical Information

The Shanghai World Expo, a 2010 Postal Numismatic Cover from Australia celebrating the Australian pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010 and containing two commemorative $0.55 Australia Post stamps and one exclusive Perth Mint commemorative dollar coin.

The coin’s reverse portrays a representation of a tiger, the Chinese zodiac animal for 2010, and the Chinese character for ‘tiger’. The design includes the inscription SHANGHAI WORLD EXPO 2010 AUSTRALIAN PAVILION and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. The coin is housed on a card portraying the distinctive shape of the Australian pavilion and its colourful logo - a representation of the Australian continent in three wavy lines symbolising the blue sea and sky, red centre and golden beaches.

The coin and card are housed in an envelope portraying Peng Peng, the Australian pavilion's kookaburra mascot. Included on the envelope are two 55c commemorative stamps issued by Australia Post portraying the pavilion logo and pavilion, and the pavilion logo and Peng Peng. A postmark in the shape of the Australian continent includes the words: "Date of issue 18 May 2010 Canberra ACT 2600". Each stamp and coin covers issued by Australia Post features a serial numbered seal of authenticity.

Billed as the biggest expo the world has ever seen, the event takes place in China between 1 May and 31 October. Australia has a significant national presence in the shape of a visually striking pavilion, where engaging exhibits and unique attractions are showcasing Australian innovation, creativity and achievement.
