The Blackbeard Pirate, a 2010 commemorative dollar coin from Australia.

Issued by the Perth Mint as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu, this 2010 dollar coin portrays Blackbeard, the archetypal blood-thirsty pirate whose ferocious reputation so terrified merchant crews that most simply surrendered wherever they encountered him. His infamous career, however, lasted less than two years. Hunted down by the Royal Navy, he was killed during his last stand in 1718.

The coin’s reverse depicts Blackbeard, who tied smouldering hemp chords in his long black hair to heighten his devilish appearance. The design also incorporates The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark and a chest containing a coloured representation of pirate treasure. The coin’s obverse shows an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the face value and the year of issue.

This coin is housed on a colored presentation card featuring images of a pirate map and treasure. The card features a fold-out stand for upright display.
