Arturo Toscanini (1867 - 1957) was an Italian musician considered by many to have been the greatest conductor of his era. He was nominated director of La Scala in Milan, he conducted at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as well as the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He was renowned for his brilliant intensity, his restless perfectionism, and his phenomenal ear for orchestral detail and sonority.
