Description Technical Information

The 100th Anniversary of the Canadian Navy, a 2010 silver proof 1 dollar coin from Canada.

The Royal Canadian Mint celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the Canadian Navy with this 2010 silver proof coin featuring the HMCS Sackville.

This coin is also the 51th annual issue in this enduring series of silver proof Canadian coins. Silver dollars gained status as collectibles in 1935 when the first silver dollar (Voyageur) was produced.

In 1910, Parliament passed the Naval Service Act to form Canada’s navy, a fledgling force that came to fruition during the Second World War when Canada built more than 120 corvettes to guard the North Atlantic. The corvette class, with 122 built in Canada by war’s end, had elevated the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) to the third largest navy in the World. His/Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Sackville was one of the original 1939-40 Flower Class corvettes ordered for the RCN. She was built at Saint John (New Brunswick) and entered service in December 1941. In 1982, she was reconverted to her original state and now serves as The Canadian Naval Memorial to honor the heritage of the Canadian Navy. She is berthed at the Sackville Landing Wharf, Lower Water Street in Halifax (Nova Scotia).

The reverse shows the HMCS Sackville, the last surviving corvette and living memorial to the Canadian Navy, its pennant number (K-181) clearly visible on its hull and its motto (Ready Aye Ready/Pręt Oui Pręt) in morse code.

Includes Capsule, Official Case, Individually-Numbered Certificate of Authenticity, and Protective Sleeve.
