In 1999, a special two dollar coin was made to commemorate the creation of the Nunavut territory. This coin depicts an Inuit drum dancer with his drum bearing an outline map of Nunavut. A stone lamp is depicted inside the map, serving as a source of warmth, providing a sense of security and representing a beacon of hope for the future of Nunavut. The new territory of Nunavut was created on April 1, 1999, changing the map of Canada for the first time in 20 years.
