The French Mint celebrates the Impressionist movement with this 2008 1/4 euro silver coin featuring both Edouard Manet and one of his famous paintings, Olympia (1863). This rectangular coin is the second in the Artists series issued by the French Mint. Olympia is an oil on canvas painting in the Realist style, and is now housed at the musée d'Orsay, the Impressionist museum in Paris. The obverse features a representation of the painting, the date of its creation, and the signature of the artist.

Edouard Manet (1832 – 1883) was a French painter also known for Luncheon on the Grass (Le déjeuner sur l'herbe) (1863), and A Bar at the Folies-Bergère (Le Bar aux Folies-Bergère) (1882). Throughout his oeuvre, Manet painted modern-day life. Some of his subjects were beggars, prostitutes, and the bourgeoisie. As an Impressionnist; he strove to be true to himself and to reproduce "not great art, but sincere art." Always controversial, Manet sought to record society using his own unique vision.
