The Edgar Degas, a 1/4 euro silver coin from France.

The French Mint celebrates the Impressionist movement with this 2007 1/4 euro silver coin featuring Edgar Degas and one of his famous paintings, L'étoile (The Star [Dancer on Stage]), now housed at the Musée d'Orsay, the Impressionist museum in Paris. This rectangular coin is the first ever issued by the French Mint.

Hilaire Germain Edgar Degas (1834 – 1917) was a French painter and sculptor whose innovative composition, skillful drawing, and perceptive analysis of movement made one of the masters of modern art in the late 19th century. While most other Impressionist painters preferred working outside to capture their subjects in the natural light, Degas preferred working inside a studio. He was a painter of contemporary life, therefore his favorite subjects were racecourses, theaters, cafés interiors, women, and ballet dancers. His paintings were an effort to record the world in an objective way. Degas attempted to catch his subjects in poses as natural and spontaneous as those recorded in action photographs.
