One of the European microstates, San Marino is a country completely surrounded by Italy. According to tradition, it was founded in 301 A.D. by Marinus of Rab, a Christian stonemason. San Marino became a member of the Council of Europe in 1988 and of the United Nations in 1992. It is not a member of the European Union.
