The Sacagawea Dollar
The proof Sacagawea Dollar Coin honors the Indian guide that led Lewis and Clark on their discovery.
Obverse: Along the rim, at the top, “Liberty”. On the left, “In God we trust”. Sacagawea, the young Shoshone woman, portrayed in three-quarter profile. On her back, Sacagawea carries her infant son Jean Baptiste, who she carried and cared for on her entire 3,000-mile portion of the expedition with Lewis and Clark. On the right, the year of issue and the mint mark.
Reverse: Along the rim, at the top, “United States of America”. On the left, “E Pluribus Unum”. A soaring American bald eagle encircled by 17 stars, symbolizing the states of the union at the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1804. Along the rim, at the bottom, the face value.
The 2004-S Proof Sacagawea Golden Dollar is the lowest mintage issue for the entire series.
