The Crucifix Icon by Dionissy
The St. Petersburg Mint presents this 2002 silver proof coin celebrating Dionissy the Wise (1440-1502/1503), a famous Russian painter and an outstanding representative of the Moscow painting school.
Reverse: In the center, the “The Crucifix” icon from the Trinity Cathedral of the Paul-Obnorsky Monastery near Vologda, painted in 1500 by Dionissy. On the sides, fragments from the Personal Annalistic Code: "The Stay in Military Opposition on the Ugra River in the Time of Ioann III" on the left, and "The Campaign of Ioann III against Novgorod" on the right. At the bottom, “DIONISSY”.
Obverse: The Emblem of the Bank of Russia (the two-headed eagle), with the semicircular inscription “Bank of Russia” framed by a circle of dots and inscriptions along the rim. At the top: “Three Rubles”. At the bottom, the metal sign, the fineness, the year of issue, the fine metal content, and the mint mark.
Dionissy, or Dionysius the Wise, was a head of the Moscow school of icon painters at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. His style of painting is sometimes called "the Muscovite mannerism". Today, “The Crucifix” painting can be seen at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
