150th Anniversary of the New Hermitage Museum
This silver proof coin celebrates the New Hermitage, opened on February 5 1852. It is the oldest public museum of World Art in Russia.
Reverse: The statue of the Venus of Tauride (a Roman copy of the 1st - 2nd centuries after the original of a Grecian sculptor of the 3rd century B.C.). On the left, a lekythos in the form of the sphinx. On the right, a sculptural portrait of the Roman Emperor Philippus Arabs (3rd century). The inscription at the bottom along the rim: “The New Hermitage”, divided by the date "150" in an oval, with the building of the New Hermitage.
Obverse: The Emblem of the Bank of Russia (the two-headed eagle), with the semicircular inscription “Bank of Russia” framed by a circle of dots and inscriptions along the rim. At the top: “Three Rubles”. At the bottom, the metal sign, the fineness, the year of issue, the fine metal content, and the mint mark.
The Hermitage collection of Western art includes works from Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Rubens, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Canova, Rodin, Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Picasso, Matisse, the Russian imperial regalia, an assortment of Faberge jewellery, and the largest existing collection of ancient gold from Eastern Europe and Western Asia.
