During medieval times, Torun was an intersection of ancient Polish trade routes at the crossing of the Vistula river. A trading and craft-producing settlement was established there during the 10th and 11th century. The Teutonic Knights built a fortress here in 1231, and in 1233, the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order granted city rights to Torun. In 1263, Franciscan monks, and then Dominicans, came to settle in Torun. In 1280, the city became a member of the Hanseatic League.

The tower of the Old Town Hall (shown on the reverse) is the oldest building of this kind in central Europe. It was over 23 meters high originally, and was built further up at the end of the 14th century to the present height of 40 meters. The first clock was installed in it in 1417. Torun’s Bridge Gate (shown on the obverse) was built in 1432 and has a rounded shape for protection from artillery fire.

The gothic buildings of Torun’s Old Town is a UNESCO’s World Heritage Site and is a tribute to Torun’s centuries-old economic, cultural and intellectual ties with the leading cities of Europe associated in the Hanseatic League.
