As part of the Animals of the World Series, the National Bank of Poland introduces this 20 Zt silver proof 2007 coin featuring the Grey Seal.
Reverse: On top along the rim, “FOKA SZARA” for Grey Seal. In the center, a family of seals with the silhouette of two more seals on a background of stylized waves. At the bottom, “Halichoerus grypus”, the Grey Seal’s scientific name.
Obverse: On top, "RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKAA" for Republic of Poland. In the center, an image of the eagle, the state emblem of the Republic of Poland, the year of issue, and the images of Poland’s national flag on each side. Under the Eagle’s left foot, the Mint mark. At the bottom, the face value.
The grey seal is the largest Baltic seal. Young grey seals are born in February and March, on the ice or on the land, depending on the range of ice cover on the Baltic Sea. Environmental pollutants, as well as excessive hunting, has led to the declining population of the Grey Seal in the Baltic.
