The National Bank of Poland is proud to offer this silver proof collector coin depicting Pope John Paul II. A month and a half before his 85th birthday, the earthly life of the Man who had a profound impact on the contemporary Church and world and in many respects set the course of contemporary history, came to an end.
Reverse: At the top, along the rim, “1920-2005 ”. In the center, an image of Pope John Paul II in front of a stylised view of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, and the inscription “John Paul II”.
Obverse: At the top, along the rim, “Republic of Poland“ and the year of issue. In the center, a view of the Baptistery from Minor Basilica of the Virgin Mary in Wadowice, and an image of the eagle, the state emblem of the Republic of Poland, with the Mint mark. At the bottom, the face value.
On October 22, 1978, the Pope held a ceremony to inaugurate his service as St Peter’s Successor and uttered his famous words "Be not afraid" commonly perceived and contemplated as the motto of his unusually intense teaching and activity. John Paul II was the 264th pope. His pontificate lasted for 26 years, 5 months and 17 days.
