The Adventures of Asterix is a series of French comic books set in the time of the Romans. The series follows the exploits of a village of ancient Gauls as they resist Roman occupation. They do so by means of a magic potion, brewed by their druid, which gives the recipient superhuman strength. Until 1977, the stories were written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo. After René Goscinny died in 1977, Uderzo continued the series. The story of Asterix has grown beyond the comic books. There are movies both animated and real-action. The role of Obelix, Asterix’s faithful friend and sidekick, is played by Gerard Depardieu.

The Magic Potion is a mysterious concoction that gives the drinker superhuman strength for several hours. The druid Panoramix brews the potion so that the village can fight back against the Roman invaders. The recipe can only be handed down by word of mouth from druid to druid.
