The Aristides de Sousa Mendes Silver Proof Coin
The French Mint honors Aristides de Sousa Mendes (1885-1954), a Portuguese diplomat assigned to the consulate of Bordeaux in France, with this 2007 silver proof 1.5 euro coin.

Obverse: On the four sides, "FRATERNITE", "LIBERTE", "EGALITE", and the year of issue. In the center, a square with "UN HOMME FRATERNEL A PRIS SUR LUI DE DELIVRER DES MILLIERS DE VISAS POUR LA LIBERTE" and "A BORDEAUX EN JUIN 1940", a description of the courageous actions taken by Aristides de Sousa Mendes in June 1940.
Aristides de Sousa Mendes was the son of Jose de Sousa Mendes, a high court judge, and Maria Angelina de Abranches. He was a man of courage and conscience. In 1940, refusing to obey the orders of his own government, he delivered Portuguese visas to refugees of all nationalities who needed to flee from France.
