This World Cup will have 20 nations contesting 48 matches over 44 days. Forty-two matches will be spread between 10 French cities, with four matches to be held in Cardiff, Wales and two matches in Edinburgh, Scotland. More than 6,000 volunteers will help organize the competition that will take place at the same venues as those used for the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

France won the right to host the 2007 Rugby World Cup back in 2004. Over 90 nations participated in the regional qualifying competitions. With a worldwide television audience of more than 3 billion in 2003, the Rugby World Cup is now the third most important sporting event after the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup.
