Christian Dior (1905 - 1957) was the most influential fashion designer of the late 1940s and 1950s. In the 1930s, Dior made a living by doing sketches for haute couture houses. In 1945, he designed for Marcel Boussac. Boussac, a man who had made his fortune from fabric, was interested in Dior's new idea that involved using lots of layers of extravagant fabrics. Dior's fashion house opened in December 1946, and the following February, he presented his first collection, known as Corolle. It was more famously known as the “New Look”, a term coined by Carmel Snow, the powerful editor-in-chief of Harper's Bazaar.

Dior's designs were more voluptuous than the boxy, fabric-conserving shapes of the recent World War II styles, influenced by the rations on fabric. He was a master at creating shapes and hourglass silhouettes. The New Look revolutionized women's dress and reestablished Paris as the center of the fashion world after World War II. Dior also defined a new business model in the post-war fashion industry by establishing Dior as a global brand across a wide range of products.

The Villa “Les Rhumbs”, Christian Dior’s childhood home, is located in a remarkable cliff top garden dominating the sea and restored in its style of the 1920’s. Transformed into The Christian Dior Museum, the Villa presents each year a new exhibition about the Dior creations; his life and his work.
