Located in the center of Place Charles de Gaulle, the Arc de Triomphe is one of the most famous monuments in Paris. Inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus, it was commissioned in 1806 by Napoleon, shortly after his victory at Austerlitz. This masterpiece of Romantic Classicism is 164 ft (50 m) high and 148 ft (45 m) wide. The names of major victories won during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods are engraved on the inside of the Arch.

Since 1920, the tomb of France's Unknown Soldier has been sheltered underneath the arch. Its eternal flame commemorates the dead of the two World Wars. Every evening, there is a small parade-like procession to place a wreath next to the flame. On national holidays and for important occasions of state, a large French flag is hung from the vaulted ceiling inside the Arch.
