The Dome of the Church Saint-Louis of Les Invalides is one of the greatest architectural triumphs of the 17th century, and was inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Jules-Hardouin Mansart handed the key to the church of the Dome of Les Invalides to Louis XIV on August 28th, 1706. The king had been waiting 35 years for this building to be completed to house "all the wounded and aged officers and soldiers". The Church of the Dome, now a military necropolis, has housed Napoleon Bonaparte’s tomb since 1840, as well as other military dignitaries.
