The 120th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty
This silver proof coin celebrates the 120th anniversary of the completion of the Statue of Liberty, as well as the centenary of the year of death of its sculptor, Frenchman Frederic Auguste Bartholdi.
Reverse: Bartholdi's portrait, his name along the rim, the years "1834" and "1904", “RF” for “French Republic”, and the famous Lion sculpture symbolizing the French resistance during the 1870 war. At the bottom, the name of the sculpture: “Lion de Belfort”.
Obverse: At the top, on the left, the face value. Along the rim, “Bartholdi, father of the statue of liberty”. In the center, two images of Bartholdi's Statue of Liberty. One is a close-up view of her face and crown, while the other shows Lady Liberty from a distance in her familiar proud pose. At the bottom, the French national motto "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" and the year of issue.
The sculptor's mother served as his model for the face of the statue. Her diadem is represents through seven rays of light the seven continents. This diadem is also a symbol of the coronation of the statue, for just as kings in the past used to wear crowns, the statue reigns as the queen of liberty.
