100th Anniversary of the Australian Open
To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Australian Open held in 1905 at the Warehouseman's Cricket Ground, the Perth Mint released the only centenary celebration coin officially endorsed by Tennis Australia.
Reverse: The curved line of a tennis seam shows a colored representation of Melbourne Park. On top, the Australian Open logo, featuring “The Grand Slam of Asia/Pacific”, three tennis players from different eras, and the metal content.
Obverse: The effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Along the rim, on the left, “Elizabeth II”. On the right “Australia”. At the bottom, along the rim, the face value.
Roland-Garros, the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open make up the four events collectively known as the "Grand Slam". The concept can be dated back to 1933, when Australian Jack Crawford was on the verge of winning all four majors.
