The 40th anniversary of the last Australian penny
The last Australian pennies were minted at the Perth and Melbourne mints in 1964. This innovative coin features a true replica of the kangaroo copper penny, produced using the original models.
Reverse: The ring features the reverse of the first penny in 1911, as well as the obverse of the pennies depicting all three monarchs during its issue span. Along the rim, on top, the dates 1911 and 1964 to signify the mintage period of the penny, as well as two stars to symbolize Australia. The insert shows the kangaroo design that dominated the reverse side of the original penny from 1938 to 1964.
Obverse: The effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Along the rim, on the left, “Elizabeth II”, and on the right “Australia 2003”.
This is the first time that all three monarchs (George V (1911-1936), George VI (1937-1952) and Elizabeth II (1953-1964)) are depicted together on an Australian coin.
