The 50th Anniversary of the end of the Korean War
This fine silver proof coin commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the end of the Korean War (1950-1953), and honors the memory of those who died, as well as honoring those who served in the war and until the withdrawal of Australian Forces in 1957.
Reverse: The coin design background of vertical lines replicates the stainless steel poles which are a major feature of the design of the Australian Korean War Memorial in Canberra. The "Dove of Peace" is shown between the floral emblems of South Korea and Australia. Along the rim, at the top “Korean War”, with “1953” and “2003” on both sides. At the bottom, the face value.
Obverse: The effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Along the rim, on the left, “Elizabeth II”, and on the right “Australia 2003”.
As a founding member of the UN, Australia was among the first countries to commit units of all three services to Korea in early July 1950, with 17,000 Australians serving until the armistice ended the fighting on 27 July 1953.
