The 65th Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
The National Bank of Poland commemorates the heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising with this 2008 silver proof 20 zloty coin featuring the Star of David against a brick wall.
Reverse: In the center, a tree and the Star of David against a brick wall. Beyong the wall, the tree is budding. At the bottom, "65. ROCZNICA POWSTANIA W GETCIE WARSZAWSKIM" (65th Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising).
Obverse: Along the rim, "RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA" for Republic of Poland, and the year of issue. In the center, loose bricks and flames next to an image of the eagle, the state emblem of the Republic of Poland. Under the Eagle’s left foot, the Mint mark. At the bottom, the face value.
The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising broke out on April 19, 1943 and was a heroic attempt to stop the ultimate annihilation of the ghetto, which started a few months earlier. For three weeks, several hundred Jews held off the heavily armed German army from within the Warsaw Ghetto in Poland. It was the first major act of Jewish resistance during the Holocaust.
