Hergé’s Tintin & Haddock silver proof coin

The French Mint proudly presents this 1.5 euro silver proof 2007 coin celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of George Remi (Hergé), the creator of The Adventures of Tintin.

Reverse: At the top, a representation of the Moulinsart Castle. In the center, a portrait of George Remi on the left and an illustration of Tintin and Captain Haddock on the right. At the bottom, the artist’s pen name, Hergé, based on his initials, G. R., reversed.

Obverse: Over a background of stars, “Centenary of Hergé”. In the center, the year of issue and the face value. At the bottom, "RF" for "French Republic".

Born in Brussels in May 1907, Hergé is one of the pioneers of the European comic strips of the twentieth century. His work remains a strong influence on comics, particularly in Europe. He developed the technique of the “Ligne Claire” (clear line), a method of purified drawing, without hatching, nor solid drop shadow. Hergé was inducted into the Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2003.

Tintin first appeared in “Le Vingtieme Siecle” newspaper in January 1929. From “Tintin in the Land of the Soviets” to “Tintin and Alph-Art”, published after Hergé’s death in 1983, Tintin’s 24 adventures have been translated into more than 50 languages as his popularity has spanned generations and national borders.

Captain Haddock is the most popular character in the Tintin adventures. He is clumsy, impulsive, generous, quick-tempered, and excessive with words. The unforgettable expletives that he fires at every suitable opportunity are legendary.
