Reverse: Along the rim on top, “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”. In the center, the face value, “2002-2007”, the symbol of the euro currency, and 12 stars for the original 12 European Union (EU) member states. Along the rim on the bottom, "The fifth anniversary of the euro".

Obverse: Since the series' inception in 2002, the obverse features an illustration of the Sower inspired by the 1897 design from Roty, “RF” for “French Republic”, and the year of issue.

Emblem of liberty, goddess of agriculture, symbol of the Republic and of France itself, the interpretations of the meaning of the Sower as a French symbol are many. Created in 1897 for the silver coins of the Third Republic, used in 1960 for the new francs, and recently on the euro 10-cent, 20-cent, and 50-cent coins, the Sower is one of the most recognized symbols of France.

On January 1st 2002, the euro became the currency of 12 European Union (EU) member states: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and three micro-states: Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City.
