Franco-Japanese Treaty – The Delacroix Painting Silver Proof Coin


The French Mint celebrates the 150th Anniversary of the Franco-Japanese Treaty with this 2008 1.5 euro silver proof coin featuring one of Delacroix famous paintings, Liberty Guiding the People (La Liberté guidant le people).

Reverse: In the center, a French painting dating from the era of the treaty: an extract from Liberty Guiding the People (La Liberté guidant le people) by Eugene Delacroix (1830).


Obverse: On top, "France-Japon" (France-Japan) and "150e Anniversaire" (150th Anniversary). On the left, the year of issue. In the center, the official logo of the 150th Anniversary of this treaty showing the Eiffel Tower and a kimono. On the right, “RF” for “French Republic”. At the bottom, the face value.


Ferdinand-Victor-Eugene Delacroix (1798 – 1863), one of the greatests and most influential French painters, is considered one of the leaders of the Romanticism movement. He was known for his bold colors and swinging brush strokes. Today, Liberty Guiding the People, Delacroix's most famous work, can be seen in the Louvre museum. Along with Liberty Guiding the People (1830), his famous paintings include Dante and Virgil in Hell (1822), and The Massacre at Chios (1824).
