In 1946, the International Film Festival opened its doors at the former Casino de Cannes. Often considered the first important international postwar cultural event, the Festival is dedicated to developing cinema through its many screenings, cultural events, forums, tributes and classes. Throughout the years, the Festival has become famed for the balance it has established between artistic quality of films and commercial impact.
The Cannes Festival is the most famous of all film festivals and one of the largest media events on the planet. Every year, over 1,500 films from more than 100 countries are in the running to be a nominee. The stars show up to bask in the limelight, and crowds gather to watch the films and awards. Cannes' reputation as the king of film festivals grows bigger with each year.
