The 90th Anniversary of the End of WWI, a 2008 commemorative coin set from Canada.

The Royal Canadian Mint, in association with the Royal Canadian Legion, is proud to issue this 2008 coin set commemorating the 90th anniversary of the Armistice. This set features an oversized commemorative 25-cent coin depicting the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, and a commemorative circulation 25-cent coin featuring the iconic red poppy, Canada's flower of remembrance.

The First World War was to be the "war to end all wars." Never before had the world seen the destruction that airplanes, tanks and submarines could bring. Never before had it witnessed the ravages of trench warfare—the terrible artillery fire, sweeping machine guns and lethal poison gas.

Between 1914 and 1918 over 650,000 Canadian men and women fought to protect the peace and freedom our country enjoys today. Of those, more than 66,000 gave their lives and another 170,000 would be wounded. Each year at Remembrance Day, Canadians show their abiding respect for those who have freely given their lives for the cause of freedom, justice and peace by wearing a poppy. It’s a powerful reminder that inspires thousands of people across Canada and increasingly throughout North America to honor the men and women who have given their lives for freedom.
